Context

In the fast-evolving world of education, staying ahead of the curve and adapting to modern teaching methods is vital. The story of our success is a testament to innovation, dedication, and the power of collaboration. Our project, a SAAS-based e-learning platform for educational institutes, is set to transform the way students learn and educators teach. 

Similar to other coaching classes in the industry, the Institute had traditionally relied on conventional data centers to host their servers. However, with the rising trend of remote teaching sweeping across the globe, they found themselves grappling with the challenges of handling a heavy influx of applications and thousands of students accessing online learning resources.

The Vision

1. To create an advanced educational platform that would cater to students preparing for highly competitive exams like JEE Main, JEE Advance, and NEET.

2. The platform to offer interactive online courses, providing an innovative and systematic approach to teaching, curated by the internationally renowned academician. 

3. The platform to ensure a seamless virtual classroom experience for both students and teachers – a solution that would guarantee optimal network performance and reliability.

4. The solution to provide uninterrupted access to all applications and study materials, with a focus on maintaining high availability at all times.

Proposed Solution

To make this vision a reality, we proposed a cloud-based application hosted on AWS. Leveraging a range of AWS services, including ECR, ECS – Kubernetes, ELB, KMS, RDS, SNS, SQS, S3, and Media Live, we aimed to build a highly scalable, secure, and responsive system that could accommodate the unique requirements of educational institutes. 

With our agile cloud infrastructure, the company can effortlessly handle traffic spikes, eliminating capacity limitations and delivering a reliable and high-performing platform for its expanding user base.

Our cutting-edge cloud environment offers a robust and scalable hosting solution, empowering seamless scaling and ensuring uninterrupted user experience during high-traffic events. The various AWS Services used are listed as below:

  • AWS VPC – Virtual Private Cloud – for security
  • AWS EC2 – ReactJs, React Native for Mobile
  • AWS ELB – Elastic Load Balancing – for load optimization and high availability
  • AWS CloudFront – to deliver/stream videos around the world
  • AWS S3 – Simple Storage Service – to store videos, images and PDF files
  • AWS K8s, Auto Scaling – For load optimization and high availability
  • AWS RDS – Relational Database Service
  • AWS Elastic IP, Redis Cache
  • WAF Shield – To block DDOS attacks and prevent malicious web attacks along with the Use of pre-signed URLs.

The Collaborative Journey

Our collaboration with the customer was marked by numerous meetings and demos. We diligently developed the application, continuously iterating and incorporating feedback. The result was an application that aligned seamlessly with the customer’s vision and the needs of students and educators. 

One of the key hurdles they faced was scalability, as their existing infrastructure struggled to accommodate the growing demands. Additionally, the Institute was also subjected to frequent Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks, resulting in a noticeable degradation of application performance.

Understanding these pain points, we offer a cutting-edge solution designed to address the Institute’s challenges. Our robust infrastructure and advanced security measures provide the scalability needed to support a large number of concurrent users. With our solution in place, the Institute can confidently deliver virtual classroom sessions without any concerns about performance, reliability, or network disruptions

Business Challenges and Solutions

  • Institutes faced challenges with traditional data centers and a heavy load of applications due to the rise of remote teaching – PSI recommended AWS Auto Scaling and Load Balancers.
  • Ensuring optimal network performance and reliability during virtual classroom sessions was a priority for students and teachers – PSI conducted a thorough assessment to validate the students’ perspective and formulated a plan for building and migrating to an AWS architecture. 
  • Access to applications and study materials needed to be readily available at all times – PSI implemented a WAF shield to block the DDoS attack on client servers.
  • Scalability was a concern due to increasing demand, and DDoS attacks caused degraded application performance. – WAF firewall was implemented along with meeting goals like High Performance, Low Latency, Auto Scaling via K8S Pods, AWS Aurora multi-zone, high availability database, and using AWS Cloud Front for streaming recorded content from AWS S3 buckets.

UAT and Go-Live

As we reached the final stages of development, a crucial step was User Acceptance Testing (UAT). This phase ensured that the application met the highest standards of quality and functionality. With the successful completion of UAT, the stage was set for the grand launch. 

The portal became the single largest platform for physics students preparing for mainstream exams and aspiring to excel in JEE mains, JEE advanced, and gain admission to top medical colleges in India. 

A Seamless Learning Experience

The SAAS-based e-learning platform offers an interactive learning experience, helping students grasp intricate physics concepts instantly. With a vast library of in-depth lecture videos, up-to-date learning modules, and innovative teaching approaches, the platform empowers students and educators alike. 

A World of Possibilities: On-Demand and Live Streaming 

One of the ongoing challenges was to decide the approach to delivering on-demand and live-streaming videos. We have been exploring the use of AWS Media Live for this purpose, ensuring that the platform remains at the forefront of educational technology. 

In conclusion, our journey from ideation to realization of the SAAS-based e-learning platform for educational institutes is a testament to the power of innovation, technology, and collaboration. This project has not only enhanced the way physics is taught but has also empowered students to pursue excellence in their academic journeys.
